The Sharp Edge Tester is the leader in product safety equipment, currently in use worldwide by manufacturers of toys, home appliances, business equipment, automobile manufacturers, home appliances, every item used in the kitchen, and much more.

With so much concern over the safety of products to be used in the home, Underwriter’s Laboratories has issued standards to test edge sharpness on a variety of consumer products.

Technical Engineering Service (TES) is the original and only manufacturer of the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50.

If you are concerned about the safety and sharpness of your product and want to meet international standards as set by UL and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, then you need to order the Sharp Edge Tester and Tape Cap Kit for use on your production line.

The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50 is extremely easy to use and durable. It consists of a clam-shell type housing which fits into the palm of a hand. Features include a compact arm, sealed ball bearings to reduce friction, and a new spring to meet the latest Underwriter’s Laboratories force requirements. All moving mechanisms are protected against dirt and breakage. The Sharp Edge Tester is used with the available Tape Cap Kit which simulates the thickness of skin on the human finger.

Specifications:

This product was designed specifically for Underwiter’s Laboratories

Underwriters Laboratories has released a “Standard for Determination of Sharpness of Edges of Electrical Equipment,” U.L. 1439. This standard calls for the use of the Sharp Edge Tester in order to provide an objective and uniform test method for determining compliance with an existing safety requirement.

Most U.L. standards covering consumer products contain a subjective requirement such as “an edge, projection, or corner of an enclosure, opening, frame, guard, knob, handle, or the like, shall be smooth, well rounded, and not sufficiently sharp to constitute a hazard.”
Based on recent publications, it is evident that the sharpness of edges on consumer products is important to many government agencies like the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Bureau of Standards. Comment from the industry — where thousands of Sharp Edge Testers are in use — favor the general design concepts of this U.L. chosen Sharp Edge Tester over all others.

This model appeared in Production Magazine and in a technical paper of the “UL Sharp Edge Tester” #MR-77-469, published by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Note: If you have a new product to submit to ‘UL’ for approval. You must use this tool to test it’s EDGES. They will not approve your product without doing so.

Design:

Designed for Ease of Use and Longevity

The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50 consists of a clam-shell type housing (made of Cycoloy plastic, the same material used to manufacture the housing of IBM computers) which fits into the palm of the hand. Features include a compact arm, sealed ball bearings to reduce friction, and a new spring to meet the latest Underwriter’s Laboratories force requirements. All moving mechanisms are protected against dirt and breakage.

The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50 is used with the Tape Kit Model TC-3. This kit consists of 42 pieces each with three pre-assembled tapes on a plastic cap, which slips on to the tool for testing.
This Tape Cap meets the U.L. requirements of three tapes:
1 layer of 3M Scotch Foam, 1/16” thick,

1 layer of 3M Scotch Foam, 1/32” thick,

1 laver of skived Teflon Tape

Use of the Tape Cap is the most efficient way for the inspector to easily and rapidly conduct multiple tests on the manufacturing line without having to install three different layers of tape on the tool prior to testing. Each time a test is performed with the Tape Cap, it can be removed, identified, and replaced within seconds; thus providing more tests in less time to facilitate inspection reports.

The Tape Cap also features a 1/16” wide guide line which is on the center of the cap and helps the inspector performing the test to “center” the tape and the tool on the edge being tested.

How to use:

Product Safety Testing Has Never Been This Easy

1. Slide the Tape Cap all the way on to the pressure head of the Sharp Edge Tester with the black center guide line and the uncovered portion of the red plastic cap facing up.

2. Position the tape covered pressure head on the edge of the item to be checked for sharpness. Holding the clam shell base in your hand, press down on the tape covered head until the arm and the tool form a straight line.

3. Move the pressure head two inches along the edge and then back again to the starting point. Then withdraw the tool from the edge. The total distance of engagement between the edge and the tape-covered head is therefore 4 inches.

4. Examine the tape cap to determine whether or not penetration has occurred through the two-sensing layers. If penetration has occurred, the black indicating tape will be visible through the resulting cut. The application of the Sharp Edge Tester to an edge with acceptable sharpness will not result in the cutting through the two outer layers of the sensing tape.
